Jacques Prévert 자크 프레베르, Barbara 바바라 & the story of Brest 그리고 브레스트 이야기

Georges Brassens
L'orage

Auxquels on a t'nu tête ensemble

The Thunderstorm   (notes)

Talk to me about clouds, talk to me about rain
Good weather turns me off and goes against my grain
Celestial blues will only make me cry
For the sweetest love to ever land on my lap
Fell from the hands of Thor with a great thunderclap
It came to me out of a doomsday sky.

One black November night a storm of great thunder
Was unleashing lightning, tearing roofs asunder
Setting loose an alarming song and dance
Bolting from her bedroom my neighbour in distress
Came knocking at my door in a state of undress
To request my immediate assistance.

"I'm alone and I'm scared, please won't you comfort me
My husband had to answer the call of duty
He is off on a perilous mission
The poor soul has to toil far outside of the norm
As he goes door to door in the fiercest of storm
For a big lightning rod corporation."

While I thought to myself that Ben Franklin be blessed
I took her in my arms with a soothing caress
And Cupid himself took care of the rest
Ye who spend time selling ligthning rods left and right
Why did you ever have this major oversight
And forget to install one on your nest.

When Jove had had his fun and went elsewhere to play
And the beauty was no longer in disarray
But radiating new found confidence
She went back to her home to dry up her husband
While asking me to stay tuned to the weather band
Let's meet again at the next turbulence.

And from that moment on I never looked downward
I have been constantly fixing my gaze skyward
I spend my time praying that clouds will stack
I look out for stratus, hope to find a nimbus
Make leering gestures at the faintest cumulus
But to this day she never has come back.

Her rep of a husband on that stormy evening
Had exponentially multiplied his earning
To the point that he became millionaire
And he whisked her away to godforsaken lands
That are cursed with blue skies and endless boring sands
Where thunder showers never grace the air.

May the gods on their winds blow my lament to her
To remind her of love and of the fierce weather
That one night we had to face together
And tell her that a very special lightning bolt
Burned right into my heart the perfect little mold
Of a rare flower that looks just like her.
